Maine Question 5 (Ranked Choice Voting)

Dear Colleagues: I am looking for co-sponsors for the following resolution: "The Libertarian National Committee supports Question 5 in Maine on the ballot on November 8, 2016." Information: If Question 5 passes, Maine will use Ranked Choice Voting in all elections starting on January 1, 2018, for Governor, State House, State Senate, US House of Representatives and US Senate. Why I support Question 5 (and have made a personal donation to RCV Maine): RCV would, at the very least, do away with the "Wasted Vote Syndrome" associated with third party and independent candidates. This would, at least, lead to more earned media and fewer debate exclusions. I think if RCV were being used for this Presidential election, Gary Johnson and Bill Weld would have been included in all four debates. I ask my colleagues to co-sponsor this email ballot and to vote "Yes" on it. Thanks, Bill Redpath

Gene, Thank you for writing and bringing your concerns and those of the supporters of this proposed resolution including the Cherokee County (South Carolina) LP to the Libertarian National Committee. Although I was a supporter of Darryl Perry's campaign for the Libertarian Party's presidential nomination at our convention, I agree that this subsequent presidential write-in campaign was ill-advised, and that it should be dropped – indeed I have already personally urged Darryl to abandon it, and reiterate that request again now (I've copied him on this message). While I believe the motives of Perry and those who support his write-in campaign are libertarian and well-intentioned – we on the LNC have received numerous messages over the past weeks urging that we censure one or both members of our presidential ticket or even dump them entirely, over concerns with a number of un-libertarian statements that have come from the Johnson/Weld campaign – I nevertheless think a write-in presidential campaign at this point does us more harm than good, and that there are better ways to respond to a duly nominated LP presidential ticket going off the rails in ideological terms. That being said, I do not think we can reasonably condemn this write-in campaign without also condemning the divergences of our presidential ticket from the LP's platform which gave rise to it. In addition to those divergences over issues such as Gary Johnson not upholding freedom of association and Bill Weld not unequivocally supporting the right to keep and bear arms, calling for the hiring of 1,000 new FBI agents, etc. (those are just the issues I recall off the top of my head), it is my understanding that the write-in campaign was also partially provoked by Weld donating $450, including $200 as recently as last month, to the New Hampshire gubernatorial campaign of Chris Sununu, the establishment Republican opponent of the Libertarian candidate nominated for New Hampshire governor, LP state representative Max Abramson (see e.g. https://www.bostonglobe.com/news/politics/2016/09/22/libertarian-for-life-d… ). Would you and the co-sponsors of your resolution be willing to add language condemning the departures of our presidential ticket from the Libertarian Party's platform, and the contributions by vice presidential nominee Bill Weld to a Republican opponent of a duly nominated Libertarian candidate for governor? If the resolution is amended in this manner so as to take a fair and balanced approach to the overall situation, and the write-in campaign is not meanwhile dropped, I would be willing to introduce the amended resolution. Hi Maureen, Thank you for writing to the Libertarian National Committee. I think your suggestion is an excellent one, and I hope the Johnson/Weld campaign will pursue it. Of course the decision is theirs and the LNC has no direct say in the matter, but as a member of the Johnson/Weld Libertarian advisory board, I'll try to suggest it in our teleconference this Wednesday. I've brought up a similar idea about Johnson working with other alternative party candidates like Jill Stein of the Green Party to hold their own debate and answer questions live right outside the venues where the two-party cartel's exclusionary, anti-democratic debates are held and where media will be present, but my understanding is that candidates are required to agree not to participate in other debates as a condition of being allowed into the cartel debates, which Johnson still hopes to get into, and that stick being held over their heads may dissuade them from doing so. Personally I disagree with this strategy, as it lets the cartel-controlled Commission on Presidential Debates to string them along and prevent them from building independent momentum, while ultimately giving them nothing. But I can understand the hope of being allowed into the cartel debates and why a candidate in Gary's position might not want to do anything to jeopardize that. So your idea of that he simply answer the debate questions in an independent video might go over better. We can also lobby as individuals for open debates. There's a petition to open the debates here: https://www.change.org/p/commission-on-presidential-debates-include-all-qua… The group Free And Equal (http://freeandequal.org/) is working to open the debates, as is Gary Johnson's Our America Initiative (https://www.fairdebates.com/) According to this site – https://theintercept.com/liveblogs/firstdebate/debate-commission-waits-unti… – the sponsors of the cartel debates in 2016, which the establishment waited until just a few days ago to reveal, no doubt precisely to spare them from as much public pressure, are: • The Anheuser-Busch companies • the Howard G. Buffet Foundation • the Kovler Fund • Crowell and Moring • AARP • the National Governors Association I haven't yet looked up the contact info for all these groups, but they should be contacted with demands to withdraw their sponsorships.
