Per his request, I'm forwarding Starchild's email to the LNC list to be
reflected on the public list.
Also, I think it is worth noting that he raises a valid concern
regarding members abilities to contact the entire LNC on matters of
importance and have those emails recorded and reflected publicly as all
our other business is.
I do know we have a new contact form on the website for members to
contact the entire LNC at once, but it isn't conducive to responses in a
discussion thread, nor is it reflected on the public thread.

Hi Justin,
My apologies – I thought I had copied the entire LNC in my original
email, but on reviewing that message I see that your address somehow
wasn't included. Not sure how that occurred, but I assure you it was
wholly unintentional.
I will note however that this sort of error comes with the territory
when LP members are required to list LNC members' email addresses
individually when seeking to communicate with the LNC, rather than being
able to send emails to a single list address to reach the entire
national committee, as LNC members themselves are able to do.
I would appreciate you forwarding this reply to the LNC list, to dispel
any impressions that may have been created among your LNC colleagues or
other list readers by what you wrote, that I deliberately failed to
include you in my correspondence.
Love & Liberty,
((( starchild )))
P.S. – Here is my other follow-up message, which I sent to the same
list of LNC members, but don't see in the thread below and therefore you
may also not have seen (please note btw that the original contains
boldface and italics, which may or may not come through due to
shortcomings in how the LP's server is configurated):

I wanted to send a public message thanking Jeff Hewitt for taking the
time to record an excellent State of the Union response. Kudos to the
team that made it happen!

Thank you for reaching out. I want to see our party electing and
re-electing Libertarians, and the only way I see that happening is with
a party that is much larger with more members. Your stated goal of
excluding, or celebrating the exclusion, of those who are not pure
libertarians on every issue runs counter to that objective of mine. My
day job would be extraordinarily easier with even one Libertarian at the
negotiating table in every state legislature committee, and bullying
anyone who isn't apex 100/100 just guarantees we don't grow.
I do recognize there is a difference between joining and being our
standard-bearer, between keeping pledges and breaking them, and that
people who join shouldn't then demand that we become non-libertarian.
But it's undeniable that many Libertarians are brutish and nasty to one
another, and a poisonous and unwelcoming environment makes the jobs of
our candidate recruiters, fundraisers, and membership staff much harder.
I try to be respectful to everyone, including those with whom I
disagree, and you won't hear me calling for any purges of the impure.

?? Email Clogged due to thread - Fwd: [lpradicals] Re: [LNCDiscussPublic] Re: [GrassrootsLibertarians] Re: [Lnc-votes] Weld Developments

FYI... I got a strange Mailer Daemon type message about the list being clogged with too many recipients or something, and needing moderator approval. I see that Mr. Phillips has responded to my email, but Mr. O'Donnell tells me it is not reaching him. We should troubleshoot this and make sure the LNC is able to read and respond to the LNC emails, and that the growing list of names on the reply-all isn't clogging up the channel.

All,
I'm glad we are having this conversation and reflecting on our values, our candidates, and how we choose to do business. However, I believe our response should not be premature. I want to remind everyone there isn't a requirement to register to vote as "L" to be a member of this Organization, the person in question is technically not yet running for any political office regardless of poltical affiliation, the deadlines for those registrations and filings are still far in the future yet, and they can switch party registration online instantly at any moment...
In the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, voters are allowed to vote in the Primary election of the party they are registered with, or if unenrolled they may choose which party Primary to vote in. The LP Presidential Primary is non-binding, we have not had an LP Primary Contest at any level of political office that had any competition or consequence that I can think of, nor that comes anywhere near the level of consequence of R and D Primaries, and registering as an L basically means you can't vote in primaries for the R Party or the D-Party where the results will have a much more conclusive impact. We struggle in MA to drive voter registration because being No-Party is always better than being in any party, least of all ours. I can sympathize with anyone who would rather vote in the R or D Primaries to effect their nominees (especially a momentous Never Trump insurgency) when our L Primary in Massachusetts has little or no effect- something we are working to address from many angles. Regardless...
...Why would a lifetime member of the LP and a presumable frontrunner for our presidential nomination switch their party registration in-person, PUBLICLY, and ensure the press covered it, just days after rumors were first spread (and immediately debunked by journalists who cared to fact-check) that he was prepared to announce for President as a Republican any day now?
In my opinion, this is a brilliant use of earned media. I am predicting Governor Weld will stay LP and is just masterfully trolling the local Boston right-wing media (it does exist, and yes, they are that desperate for news) that was attempting to discredit him in the eyes of Libertarians and Republicans both. The media runs cover for their politicians, that's no secret. A Primary challenge and a strong LP candidate are both bad news for the Trump Republicans.
The media promoting the angle of an undecided or flip-flopping Weld is, in my view, an attempt to run interference. They mention a Primary challenge weakens the incumbent, blaming Pat Buchanan for George HW Bush's loss to Bill Clinton, while ignoring the contribution of the third candidate to that loss. This is clearly giving their readers the impression- if you like Trump, the Primary Challenger is bad! But the Third Party is no threat at all. All the political insiders they interviewed for this story were former Trump Campaign Staff. Only the Boston Globe reached out to Libertarians- Chairman Sarwark, Mr. Fishman, and myself, for comment.
With the Politics and Eggs event next week, which was obviously supposed to have a big announcement of some kind, it should be a huge red flag that the right wing media wasn't telling anyone to tune in to that event for an announcement of some kind, rather trying to "spoil the surprise" by asserting they have already confirmed what's going to happen. I believe they are trying to fatigue the readers of Weld before he has a chance to speak for himself. However, I also believe Weld may be taking advantage of this in an expert way.

"He has flatly denied a WCVB-TV report that he has taken a leave from his law firm, Mintz Levin, and that an announcement about a presidential campaign could be imminent. “No, not correct, either item,” he wrote in an e-mail to the Globe Wednesday night."
I should note that I jokingly included in my Conflicts of Interest- "thinks Bill Weld is a good Libertarian". I wrote that because I am from Massachusetts, Bill Weld was my Governor (though I was a pre-teen when he left office), I have been able to attend lots of events and speeches he has given over the past 2 years, and I've gotten to know him through his support of our Fishman for Auditor campaign in Massachusetts, one that would probably have been unheard of by most if not for his endorsement which carried a lot of weight for us.
The Governor has been a friend to the Libertarian Party of Massachusetts and it's candidates, he has hosted events for us, he has travelled to numerous other LP conventions and events. I would be baffled to find out this was all in vain. If I am wrong on this, I will personally feel as betrayed as any of you, I will retract my conflict of interest statement with regret, and I will join in crafting our response and evolving our party to deal with these situations in the future. I don't think those feelings of betrayal and hopes dashed should be part of our response.
Most importantly, we should confirm with facts before we take any action, and we should be prepared to act swiftly for a range of contingencies when the time comes.
I think it is also an important lesson that we must learn, and one that is sorely lacking in this and other conversations we have, is that we are a real political party- not a think tank or a leader of Libertarian ideology, and we must focus on becoming an organization that expertly elects Libertarians to public office at all levels. This rumor has caused the entire Libertarian community to descend into chaos, some viewing it as good and good riddance, some as a bad sign that we, the LNC as an organization, cannot grapple with the two-party system because when we attract candidates who can win, we fail to provide the infrastructure and support that is required to mount a successful campaign.
We must instill confidence in candidates, donors, and voters, that they can trust us with the monumental task of electing Libertarians even when we are the underdog at every level of competition.
There are Libertarians running with R's next to their names for the sole reason that the R's have the machine that makes campaigning easy and winning possible. We should not view this as a "betrayal", but a failure on our part to court, to support, and to be effective in growing and advancing our stated mission and agenda.
Let's focus on ourselves and what we can do to achieve Liberty in our Lifetime.
Thank you for all you folks do for the Liberty of Others and I look forward to achieving it together.
Very Respectfully,
Jeff Lyons

I do not think framing the concerns below as a purity purge is nuanced or fair. Neither is about kindness (Starchild is the kindest person I know).
I’m finding that the word “purity” is an LP shibboleth to avoid hard discussion when what we are really talking about is violence.
However, the “celebration” mentioned below had to do with political opportunism not purity.
Not everything can be papered over.

I agree with Starchild for the most part. He left, he is gone, and that is that. Let’s focus on what we need to do to grow the party, and recruit candidates for 2019 and 2020.
HOWEVER, maybe we could take this as a learning exercise. IF he feels that being in the GOP will be better for him because the establishment would NEVER screw him over? Well, that part is not on us, but there are things we need to do better, and not because we do a crappy job, it is because of the reality we face on the ground. To be more competitive, money is a huge factor… We have the best message in the history of electoral politics, and yet, in my district, the man who won spent over $10,000,000 to tell the voters that he was not Scott Wallace and littering the county with his yard signs. What has been selling is FEAR. It is the only play the establishment has, and yet, they are successful because it has a lot of money to sell it.
Yes, he lied to us. He did some good as well. Nearly $6,000 was given to the Sharpe Campaign, and he raised money for other LP candidates as well. Let’s not walk forward being pissed off, Let’s walk forward doing the one thing that will make him regret his decision.
Let’s SUCCEED! Let’s Succeed in raising the money we need, succeed in achieving ballot access for our candidates without sweating it so much. Let’s start winning elections, because we have the tools, and we have the talent! Jeff showed the way in California, let’s follow his lead and change the reality on the ground here in our nation! I am working on raising money for ballot access and campaigns here in PA. There is a great deal to do and not much time to make it all happen, AND YET… we can.
Just a couple thoughts on this Tuesday evening. Have a wonderful night folks, I will see you at the next LNC meeting!
Sincerely,
Steve Scheetz
I think he will do more good in the GOP. And he still lied to us just like he lied to New York.
I care more about the betrayal of our dejegates than being rough on Weld.

I hear you Caryn Ann. Maybe nix the "expression of disappointment"? Or express our disappointment that he doesn't have a stronger commitment to libertarianism? But we dodged a bullet here, even if saving the LP wasn't his motive. Going after him too harshly would convey the impression that we still haven't recognized and embraced this as a positive development, not a negative one. It's also possible, as I think someone mentioned in this thread, that Weld may yet do some good for ballot access, etc., within the GOP, if we keep a channel of communications open.

I agree with Tim here. I'm not a Bill Weld fan, but I see no need to slam the door on his butt on the way out.
High-profile candidates like Weld who aren't solidly libertarian actually do us a favor by leaving the Libertarian Party. Far better that he go and compete in the Republican primary, where he will be able to argue for freedom in contrast with other candidates who are less libertarian than he is, than that we run the risk of him supplanting candidates with better views to become the LP nominee and betray our principles to the lasting detriment of the party and the larger libertarian movement and cause of freedom for which we stand.
No one familiar with Weld's record should be particularly surprised by this opportunism. Let's move on, wish him well in promoting freedom as a Republican to whatever limited extent that party will embrace it, and let any egg on our faces serve as a valuable lesson to Libertarians not to succumb to the siren songs of big names, big money, establishment credentials, etc.., next time such a candidate comes along.

While party members may feel betrayed, I don't see an advantage in harshly condemning him.. An expression of disappointment and wishing him well in future endeavors would be appropriate.

As I wrote before, a committee applicant had written HQ to (rightly in my
view) complain that no further contact was ever made with them after their
application. In the future, I hope we include that as a responsibility of
the interim or permanent committee chairs. I took an hour this evening to
go through the hundreds of pages and do a proper followup email to each and
every one.

LNC Colleagues,
Boston media reported today that a town clerk had leaked information
that Bill Weld has changed his voter registration from Libertarian to
Republican. This is in advance of the Governor's scheduled appearance at
Politics and Eggs at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics on 02/15.
This Breakfast at NHIOP has long been considered a must-attend event for
presidential candidates, and many are encouraged to announce their runs
at this event. Should Governor Weld intend to do so, I believe it would
be prudent that our leadership and staff be well prepared for the
inevitable media inquiries regarding the switch. I also believe a
statement from the Chair, or the LNC as a whole would be beneficial
given the tumultuous nature of our membership.
At the very least, a Press release seems appropriate, although, in this
case, a resolution from the LNC condemning the actions would have my
full support as well.
