I have a number of comments I wish to make about the Scottish STV voting system, but I don't have time to write it all up this evening. I will start with these comments and add more details to these thoughts later. It is one thing to read the theory and rules for a voting system on a webpage, but it's another thing to print out the paper ballots and enact the process yourself to see the effects of each step. Last night, I took the 7 ballots cast up to that point, printed them out on paper, and put them in piles on the floor to manually experience how it works. It didn't take long before my eyes got wide. Then a little later my jaw dropped as I realized more and more implications of the process. When I was done, I paced around the living room in a bit of a rant as I put my realizations into words. Clearly, this voting system was envisioned for situations in which the number of ballots being cast VASTLY outnumbers (by orders of magnitude) both the number of seats being filled and also the number of candidates. In our case, however, if everyone had voted it would have been 17 ballots cast to choose from more than 40 candidates to fill 9 seats. I only saw ballots from 12 people on one election and 13 on the other, making the ratios even worse. This seems to be in the range of worst-case-scenario for this voting system. With these ratios, the process devolves into essentially a casino game of chance necessitating random candidate eliminations early in the process. After the first round of vote distributions, we might as well just tell the candidates to play Russian roulette...or for fewer dead bodies we could just draw names out of a hat. If I correctly understand the process, then it's mathematically impossible for the number of ballots cast in these two elections to elect more than 6 candidates to each committee. Looking at the vote distribution, we'll elect at least 3 but no more than 6, depending on the outcome of some random selections, so we're in for re-balloting anyway. More specifics later... -Alicia

Since the in-person meeting is coming up, this is notice that I am requesting time for a motion to reconsider the Immigration resolution Ballot 190203-1 and if passed, to reconsider that ballot. With Great Regret

Colleagues, It with with great regret and a heavy heart I must write today in order to tender my resignation as the Region 1 Alternate to this body. Unfortunately, my financial and personal circumstances changed to the point that I am no longer able to uphold the agreement with the states I made in July at our last convention. I wish to thank you all for the time I was able to be on the Libertarian National Committee, and would also like to express the admiration and respect I have for the wonderful activists of Region 1. I will miss this greatly, and perhaps one day, when life balances back to normal, I will once again run for office for this body. While I may not be able to continue to discharge the duties needed in this capacity, I will remain an ever constant pain in the neck for those seeking to limit the liberty of others. The test of our using the OpaVote system for a real election is done, and I think fantastically useful revealing some easy pitfalls to avoid in any future runs. Before I release the results, I need direction from the chair. 1. A name was inadvertently not included on the ballot. Ms. Mattson voted for that applicant and I do not know if anyone else would have, but for the inadvertance, and I am not sure that is the key question as I remember how upset I got at the 2016 convention when NOTA was left off of a ballot even though I had no intention of voting NOTA in that race. 2. The ballot instructions were to pick up to nine. That was not explicitly spelled out in the enabling motion but was my interpretation of it in light of my intent in making it and the well over a handful of committees we had just populated in which we limited the choices. Depending on the chair's guidance on these two issues, it is relatively trivial to correct. - I can re-enter all the current ballots but use Ms. Mattson's identified one including that excluded member. - We can ask any member if they wish to add additional choices to go beyond nine (and include that excluded member if they wish) and I re-enter. - We can restart on a fresh ballot with lessons learned and ask everyone to voluntarily get their votes in early.
