Peter Drucker's Book - Part One

At our New Orleans LNC Session last December, the Chair kindly gave every LNC member a copy of Peter Drucker's book "Managing the Nonprofit Corporation." I finished the book around Christmas time, and while I was reading it I made a list of interesting citations. Here is Part One of those citations: Page 5 "One of our most common mistakes is to make the mission statement into a kind of hero sandwich of good intentions. It has to be simple and clear. As you add new tasks, you deemphasize and get rid of old ones. You can only do so many things. Look at what we are trying to do in our colleges. The mission statement is confused - we are trying to do 50 different things. It won't work, and that's why the fundamentalist colleges attract so many young people. Their mission is very narrow. You and I may quarrel with it and say it's too narrow, but it's clear. It enables the students to understand. And it also enables the faculty to know. And it enables that administration to say, we aren't going to teach accounting." Contrast that with the 6 different "missions" in the Purposes section of our Bylaws. Page 71 "You can see some great achievements where people labored in the wilderness for 25 years. But they are very rare. Most of the people who persist in the wilderness leave nothing behind but bleached bones. There are also true believers who are dedicated to a cause where success, failure, and results are irrelevant, and we need such people. They are our conscience. But very few of them achieve. Maybe their rewards are in Heaven. But that's not sure, either. "There is no joy in Heaven over empty churches", St. Augustine wrote 1600 years ago to one of his monks who busily built churches all over the desert. So, if you have no results, try a 2nd time. Then look at it carefully and move on to something else." That directly corresponds with what Nathaniel Branden said about Libertarians who want the Libertarian Party to fail so that they can continue to be big fish in a small pond. Page 84 "Marketing in a non-profit organization becomes effective when the organization is very clear about what it wants to accomplish, has motivated everyone in the organization to agree to that goal and to see the worthwhileness of that goal, and when the organization has taken the steps to implement this vision in a way which is cost-effective, in a way which brings about that result." Page 92 "I would say that organizations running annual campaigns without asking for specific gifts could, with the same effort, probably increase their income by as much as 25% by asking for a specific gift." In other words - don't just give donors a laundry list of amounts - use their giving history to ask for one specific amount. Page 100 "Traditionally, businesses have researched their own customers and know, or try to know, as much as possible about them. But even if you have market leadership, non-customers always outnumber customers. The most important knowledge is the potential customer. The customer who really needs the service, wants the service, but not in the way it is currently available today." I am sure you will all agree that LP projects are almost always designed to keep our current members happy. Millions of libertarians in this country desperately want and need a successful third political party, but we refuse to give it to them because we are too concerned with keeping tiny, but vocal segments of our membership happy (video conference special meetings, sending this e-mail list to the RNC and the DNC, etc). Page 108 "Equally dangerous is the opposite - to go for the easy results rather than for results that further the mission. Avoid overemphasis on the things the institution can easily get money for, the popular issues, the easy things. Universities, for instance, often are under great pressure to accept money for a chair that administration and faculty feel actually detracts from the school's mission (we call them "Mickey Mouse chairs)." A great example of this is the 1/12 of a building that the previous LNC authorized for the Immediate-Past-Chair to purchase. Because of poor financial management on the part of the Immediate-Past-Chair, the down payment cannibalized the general fund by such a large amount that the ED was forced to fire our receptionist. Think of that - the supposed "third largest political party" in the United States was so recklessly managed that it could not even afford to retain a dedicated live person to answer the phone and welcome visitors. I don't blame the current ED for this - he has to follow the orders of the Chair. If you think I am being too harsh, look at the reserve fund charts over the past 5 years. Page 110 "The first - but also the toughest - task for the non-profit executive is to get all of these constituencies to agree on what the long-term goals of the institution are. Building around the long term is the only way to integrate all these interests." Page 112 "To believe that whatever we do is a moral cause, and should be pursued whether there are results or not, is a perennial temptation for non-profit executives - and even more for their boards. But even if the cause itself is a moral cause, the specific way it is pursued better have results. There are always so many more moral causes to be served than we have resources for that the non-profit institution has a duty - towards its donors, toward its customers, and toward its own staff - to allocate its scarce resources for results rather than to squander them on being righteous." If this board continues to spend huge amounts of time and effort debating peripheral issues like videoconferences and purchasing monuments, we will continue to lose members and donors to organizations that actually get results in the real world. IALP motion, LP outreach at ISFLC

Dear colleagues: I hope all is well with you. I am writing to offer some comments regarding the motion currently before us, and to offer my thanks to some of our colleagues for their fine work. 1) In a separate message I shall vote "aye" on the motion concerning the IALP charter and the appointment of Geoff Neale as our representative to that body. While I believe there are reasonable questions concerning the charter, I do not believe there is a substantial danger to the LP if we become a Founding Member. In addition, it is fine with me for Mr. Neale to serve as our representative, especially given the amount of spadework he has done for the IALP. 2) Please join me in offering thanks and congratulations to the following people (listed in alphabetical order of surname) for their fine outreach on behalf of the LP at the International Students For Liberty Conference in Washington, DC last weekend: Pranav Badhwar Andy Bakker Wes Benedict Chris Brookover John Buckley Jeff Carson Carla Howell Bob Johnston Robert Sarvis Bridget Ulrich Arvin Vohra I was able to help at our booth for brief periods at various times on Saturday, and I agree completely with Brett Bittner's assessment regarding the quality of their work. Allow me to offer special thanks to Mr. Benedict, Ms. Howell, and Mr. Johnston, who invested a great deal of time to conduct an excellent outreach effort. Also, please join me in thanking Robert Kraus and Casey Hansen, who helped to set up our booth at the conference. (I apologize if I have failed to recognize others who deserve thanks in this matter.) I believe you would be delighted to meet the young libertarians who attended the conference. The overwhelming majority of them are bright, talented, and energetic, as well as being very nice. I am pleased to report that once again I had the honor of addressing the conference. It was particularly nice to address the conference this year, as it is an anniversary year for me; 30 years ago I became heavily involved in libertarian outreach on college campuses. The growth of organizations such as Students For Liberty and Young Americans for Liberty is very encouraging, and I suspect the best is yet to come. As always, thanks for your work for liberty. If we pass this motion, not only are we approving the charter of the IALP, but we are also designating a particular person as our Representative to it. As board members of what is probably the most influential Libertarian Party on the planet, we have an obligation to make sure that the LP member who is appointed to represent us to the IALP is able to put our Party in the best possible light. I am concerned that the Immediate Past Chair of the Libertarian Party might not be the best person for that job. FW: This Patriot Can Remove Harry Reid

Since this topic is not directly relevant to the State Chairs e-mail list, but it is relevant to which tactics and strategies we encourage and cajole our affiliate parties to use to achieve our unofficial Mission Statement, I am re-posting it here, along with my cogent comments. First of all, Mr. Executive Director, despite what you wrote below, the current leadership of the LP of Nevada has never endorsed a Republican for public office. They gave letter grades to Republicans in some races, but they did not endorse any Republicans. Second of all, the job of the Libertarian Party is not to make our members feel good about themselves by finally "hitting an all-time high record" for a vote percentage for US Senate. Let's pretend the LP of Nevada had a really high-profile person who wanted to run against Harry Reid. Do you think the Libertarian Party of Nevada would be better off if that person managed to keep Harry Reid in office for yet another term by having exit polls show that the LPN nominee did actually steal enuf votes from the Republican nominee to keep the Republican from winning, or would the LPN be better off if that same high-profile person ran for, and won, a seat on the Clark County Commission? In the former case, being the "Balance of Power" could very well inspire the Republicans in Nevada to pass legislation to make ballot access worse, and the LPN would have nothing to show for that election except a bunch of news stories that will poison the LP name in Nevada for years to come. You might try to counter that by saying that the Democrat Party would love us, but do you really think that ANY of that love would be demonstrated by showing up in actual legislation, or by having the Democrats appoint a Libertarian to a high level position? In the latter case, you would have a Libertarian on the County Commission in Las Vegas, which would set that person up to run for State Assembly in 4 to 8 years. It is easy to feed people's egos by getting them to run for offices that they know they won't have to serve in. That is because it is fun to show up at editorial board meetings or to rallies with 30 Libertarians in the audience and pontificate. It is a lot more difficult to get Libertarians to run for offices that they might actually win, because that means they actually have to spend the next 4 years trying to convince their non-Libertarian colleagues to change their minds and vote in a libertarian fashion. I happen to disagree with Mr. Pojunis only to the extent that I think he is a little overly-optimistic about the ease of winning State Assembly seats. But - I agree with Brett 100% that "we are not in a position to win a US Senate seat nor Congressional seat at this time." And that doesn't just apply to Nevada - it is true nationwide. Bob Beers happens to be a friend of mine since before i was involved in politics. We both worked in the financial industry and he was our PCAOB Auditor. I take Gary Johnson's comments, in context, to be a compliment to the Libertarian party. He is simply expressing a truth; the very basic reality is that: 1> Gary Johnson wants to run for president and needs ballot access, and 2> The LP will most likely want Gary Johnson to be our candidate and all we have to offer is ballot access. This is simple logic; it's often called "win-win". Gary may not pass the Libertarian test of everyone in our party, but he said it very well when he said: "Whatever party you run for - Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Green - you're carrying baggage that, whether you think you're carrying it or not, you are, because you are the representative of that party. I always tell people that running as a Libertarian, I have the least amount of explaining to do." How many resources are being misdirected away from National and the states and put into Our America Initiative, which looks like the framework for a new Political Party to me and not just a PAC like some have claimed. I think people need to start asking themselves this question. Also, How many state chairman or vice-chairman and other leaderships are OAI directors? Maybe if people were not putting their energies and efforts of their state organizations into the coffers of OAI and it's Honorary Chairman Climbing Mountains in Antarctica, living a Rock Star lifestyle building a national movement directed towards one person, things might be better for the National party membership. When there is an argument in a state between various factions, OAI often seems to be there to take a side and/or fuel the dissent. Since 2012, Gary Johnson has been CONSISTENTLY been a poor advocate for the National Libertarian Party on the national level. Obviously, we don't have someone else that can be put out there to counter him, but do we really need to have our State Organizations directing their volunteers and members in his direction? Also, In 2014, the LSLA comped the premier booth they were selling to OAI. That was nearly $1000 lost for the LSLA coffers. We have a consistent diversion of Party resources away from building the party to support one person that is not truly supporting us. We need to stop supporting people that don't truly support us. SFL Conference - their Program

This is the program for the SFL Conference that ended a couple of hours ago: https://studentsforliberty.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/2015-ISFLC-Program -Booklet.pdf The people who picked the speakers for the 2014 Libertarian National Convention chose to make it a third-rate Students for Liberty Conference instead of a first-rate political party convention. They did that by going out of their way to book movement speakers, and only scheduled a token "Elected Officials Panel" breakout session opposite the voting for LNC At-Large positions. If we are to be a successful political party, we need to start acting like a political party, and stop trying to pretend that this is 1974. I admit that back then it was probably necessary for the Libertarian Party to schedule at least a couple of "movement speakers" at its Conventions. In 2015, it is a huge mistake for this political party to waste any time whatsoever trying to duplicate activities that are already being done very well by other organizations. LP Outreach at ISFLC

Mr. Chair, I wanted to drop you a line and publicly commend the staff and volunteers who designed and operated the outreach both this weekend at the International Students for Liberty Conference. Every staff member and volunteer that I observed and encountered was professional and helpful, and the offers made seemed to really have sparked am interest among the students I spoke with at the conference. As a marketing guy, I really appreciated the effort to get the logo (as much as I despise it) carried throughout the conference by as many attendees as possible via the string bookbags. Wes, Please share my feedback with staff and your volunteers about their activity. You guys did a great job engaging the audience and serving their needs from what I saw. Kudos! Frequency of fundraising pitches

At the last LNC meeting we had some discussion about how often to send out fundraising mailings. Wes Benedict had been receiving pressure to reduce the frequency, based on complaints from a few individuals. But I and several other LNC members expressed ourselves emphatically that those individuals should be ignored: The number of letters should be increased, as long as they remained profitable. Accordingly, the 2015 budget was amended to authorize 9 instead of 6 major house letters. Those would be supplemented by occasional email fundraising pitches. I therefore found today's Politico article of interest (*Activists bristle at Hillary Clinton fundraising pleas -- Constant solicitations for cash in the absence of an actual candidate aren’t sitting well <http://www.politico.com/story/2015/02/activists-hillary-clinton-fundraising…>*), especially the following paragraphs: *As frequently as Ready for Hillary sends its solicitations — recipients say they arrive daily — experts say barraging inboxes has become the new norm.* *“The best practice used to be that you would only send a couple per day at max,” said Michael Whitney, an email campaigning specialist at the progressive communications firm Revolution Messaging. But in recent years, he said, email campaigners have become more aggressive without registering any meaningful backlash.* *The new consensus is that constant emailing “might annoy a lot of people, but it doesn’t mean they’re going to unsubscribe and it doesn’t mean they’re not going to donate in the future.”* *“Three years ago, the idea of sending more than two emails a day was considered abusive,” he added. “That’s gone out the window.”* Now obviously Hillary is at the extreme other end of the fundraising spectrum, and it's not something we want to emulate. The article indicates that the super-saturation of solicitations is finally taking its toll on her potential contributors. But two-a-day used to be the "best practice"? And more than that is no longer considered abusive? Really? Between what the LP is presently doing, and what the Hillary campaign is overdoing, there's an enormous gulf. It seems like there's ample room for us to increase the frequency of our fundraising emailings and snail mailings without getting anywhere near to the level which would turn out to be counterproductive. Dan Wiener P.S. I'm apparently on Rand Paul's email list (not that I've ever contributed to him) and his RandPAC sends out a fundraiser pitch an average of once a day. (Sometimes it's twice a day, sometimes they'll skip a day.) I have to assume that it's working or they wouldn't be doing it. -- *"In general, we look for a new law by the following process.
