When Nancy and Geoffrey Neale give us their Convention Report for the 2014 Libertarian National Convention, I will bet you that at least 20% of our Delegates chose the no registration fee option. The 2014 Green Party Annual Meeting was held this past weekend in Minnesota. Unlike our Convention, they did not have a "zero registration fee option." The dues for joining the Republican Party are $0.00. They don't call it a floor fee, but I paid over a thousand dollars to attend the Republican national in 1984. The Democrats have been getting welfare and foodstamps to pay their membership for years. Both major parties receive millions of dollars in federal subsidies to cover the floor fees at their conventions. If we could just elect a President, maybe we could have federally subsidized conventions, too. Unrelated question: in the states that have legalized pot, can they buy marijuana cookies with foodstamps? Some comments for your consideration

Dear colleagues: I hope all is well with you. I am writing to offer some comments for your consideration; I hope you find them worthy of your attention. 1) In separate messages I shall vote in favor of the two motions currently under consideration. In particular, I shall vote in favor of the motion to appoint me an International Representative (to serve along with immediate-past LNC chair Geoff Neale). Given the nature of the position, I do not consider it inappropriate for me to vote on the motion. In addition, no one on the LNC has expressed concerns about this matter. However, if by chance any of you have concerns about my voting on this motion, please let me know as soon as possible. 2) At this moment, I strongly suspect the motion to hold an in-person LNC meeting on Dec. 13-14 in the greater New Orleans area will be approved. If so, then we may wish to keep in mind a couple of items for planning purposes. Specifically, the anniversary of the founding of the Libertarian Party will take place on Thursday, Dec. 11, and the celebration of "Bill of Rights Day" will take place on Monday, Dec. 15. It is possible that a press release about the founding of the LP (along with info about the upcoming LNC meeting in the New Orleans area) may generate some publicity and media outreach opportunities for the LP and the Libertarian Party of Louisiana. In addition, if the Libertarian Party of Louisiana and its local organizations plan to conduct celebrations of "Bill of Rights Day" on or about Dec. 15, perhaps those LNC members who are able to spend an extra day in the "Big Easy" could make themselves available to assist such celebrations. For whatever it is worth, the Jefferson Area Libertarians (the local LP affiliate to which I serve as secretary) has held "Bill of Rights Day" events annually since 1999. These events have routinely generated favorable publicity for us and the Libertarian Party. (Our annual event, now known as the "Bill of Rights Acclamation," usually takes place on the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville, Virginia; it features several speakers, along with a public reading of the Bill of Rights.) I was present at the beginning of the recent convention. Before I voted to sustain the chair on a procedural question, I voted with the overwhelming majority, (probably 7/8, although not counted) to substitute the list of delegates submitted by the Reeves group for the slightly shorter one submitted by the Wagner group. I wasn't at the 2012 convention, but the record shows (I know, "old story complete with refuted 'facts'") that the delegates voted then to reject the opposite, a motion to substitute the Wagner delegation for the Reeves delegation. Both votes clearly overruled the flawed JC opinion. I realize in retrospect that 2014-10 was so watered down that I actually agreed with parts of it. I do regret that we didn't censure our credentials committee for accepting the rogue LPO's list in the first place. (They did at least, correctly list Timothy Reeves as the delegation chairman.) I respect your thoughtful posts and invite you to comment on any other points that you disagree with. I am an old man with failing memory so please humor me by re-refuting any of my points that you have previously addressed since I have forgotten (or missed) your previous responses. The proposed motion states that it is "inoperable", meaning that it can't be carried out under the real conditions that exist. I think that a more important consideration is that it is mute, because it has been replaced by at least three subsequent motions by the LNC, decisions of the Oregon Judicial Committee, and most importantly, by two votes of the convention delegates. (none of which have been appealed to the JC) But let's go back to the JC decision anyway. It is inoperable for several reasons: 1. Mr. Wagner had no standing before the JC. His group has never been affiliated with us, so he couldn't rightfully claim that our action had disaffiliated them. 2. The JC had no jurisdiction in the matter actually before them. They are prohibited by our bylaws from adjudicating disputes about which group is recognized. 3. The opinion of the JC was just that, an opinion. They didn't issue any orders to enforce their opinion. 4. Their opinion was mostly false and only partially true. The group that has ballot access is the one recognized by the Secretary of State. The group that follows the bylaws, fulfills their commitments under the affiliation agreement, and is recognized by the delegates in convention is the one that is affiliated with us. 5. Everyone tried to carry out that decision as if it had been ordered, but were unable to do so. The SOS refused to decide the issue and sent the LPO to the courts, where a judge refused to decide the issue and instructed them to settle it internally. When their JC settled it, the SOS refused to change. But they did indicate that they would accept an unambiguous statement from the LNC. That is what we are attempting to accomplish with the proposed motion. Everyone tried to carry out that decision as if it had been ordered, but were unable to do so. The SOS refused to decide the issue and sent the LPO to the courts, where a judge refused to decide the issue and instructed them to settle it internally. When their JC settled it, the SOS refused to change. But they did indicate that they would accept an unambiguous statement from the LNC. That is what we are attempting to accomplish with the proposed motion. I will oppose any and all efforts to get the LNC involved in the LP Ore gon's internal matters. We have wasted enough of our time, energy and money to no avail and there is no sense in stroking fires or egos any further. I am especially opposed to any use of LNC staff to intervene in this squabble and would also oppose any official LNC presence at any LP Oregon convention during this term. Let us proceed to work on the betterment of state affiliates that want our help, build a war chest for the 2016 Presidential campaign and keep focused on our effort to return the idea of Liberty to our country. New Orleans - early arrival for a River tour?

I am currently talking to our Louisiana LNC members to see if it is possible to arrange a trip to Port Eads. Where the heck is Port Eads? Go to http://mapcarta.com/21021362 And then zoom out enough so that you can see where it is in relationship to New Orleans. Because you need a boat to get there, if we pull this off it is going to be a full day trip. It would probably have to happen on the Thursday before our probable LNC Session in New Orleans. The bad news is that it means arriving in New Orleans on Wednesday. The good news is that you would have all day on Friday to tour New Orleans. The attraction of this trip would be 1. Getting to see a section of the Mississippi River that very few tourists ever get to see. 2. You would probably get to see a few alligators You can read about the destination here http://www.porteads.com/ Our negotiations with the various vendors are very preliminary right now. I am going to try to get the transportation cost from New Orleans to Port Eads and back down to the $100 to $200 per person range. (1) I know that sounds steep, but remember that this would be a full day trip - probably leaving New Orleans at 7am and returning around 6pm. At this point, I just want to let you know we are working on this, in case it piques your interest. Needless to say, this trip would also be open to any LP of Louisiana members. Scott Lieberman 1.
