All,
I apologize in advance. Due to prior work commitments, I will not be
able to attend.
Some quick notes for a divisional report...
--------
*_Caught up on candidate recruitment_*
I am currently caught up on any candidate inquiries that were sent to us
from LP National, although there have been no returned communications at
this time. This includes someone who appeared to express interest in
running for office in a comment on one of LP Illinois' Facebook posts.
*_Petitioning for 2026 Libertarian Primary in Cook County underway_*
Petitioning is underway in Cook County for the Libertarian primary next
spring. Thanks to Justin Tucker for extending the invitation to sit in
on one of their recruitment meetings, ensuring they can have as full a
slate as possible for the November 2026 general election.
622 valid signatures is the threshold for all five major offices in Cook
County up for election in 2026: President of the Board of Commissioners,
County Clerk, County Sheriff, County Treasurer, and County Assessor. All
17 seats on the Board of Commissioners, and the valid signature
threshold varies from 17 in District 7 to 97 in District 17. 622
signatures are also required for two seats currently up on the Board of
Review (1st and 2nd Districts).
If you would like to help support their drive in any capacity, feel free
to reach out to Justin Tucker, Adam Balling, or Jim Humay.
Petitioning will run until late October/early November, when the filing
period is set for Monday, October 27 through Monday, November 3.
For any offices where there's no nominee, the Cook County Libertarian
Central Committee will have until Monday, June 1, to file "nominations
in vacancy" to the County Clerk's office.
Cook County's signature requirements are attached below.
*_Other election-related notes_*
Speaking of the 2026 election, I noticed that the Illinois State Board
of Elections has updated some documents, which have also been attached.
Based on the election calendar, county conventions are scheduled for
Wednesday, April 15 (the irony of holding it on Tax Day), so we should
plan on holding our officer and SCC elections at that time.
Please note that our 2026 petitioning cycle is much earlier than earlier
and will start on February 25, 2026, 20 days before the Primary
Election, which is set for March 17, 2026. Our filing window for our
statewide petition will be Monday, May 18 through Tuesday, May 26.
(Thanks to that Monday being Memorial Day, it gives one more day to give
a final push to collect petition signatures.)
Not accounting for one day to finalize assembly of the petition, that
brings our total days to circulate petitions to 89 days.
We don't have anyone actively campaigning for (despite some prior
interest) a nomination for any of the statewide races: U.S. Senate,
Governor/Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State. State Comptroller,
State Treasurer, or Attorney General, or that of district-oriented
positions such as U.S. House, Illinois Senate, and Illinois House.
*_October veto session_*
The Illinois General Assembly will be back in Springfield for six days
in October for its annual veto session. They will be in Springfield
October 14-16 and October 28-30. If there are any bills you'd like us to
track in this session, please reach out to Legislative Director Cody
Graves, legislative at lpillinois.org.
*_Federal matters as SCC Representative_*
I've tried reaching out to Rep. Mary Miller (15th Congressional
District, R - Oakland) regarding matters that not only has she ignored,
but also matters ignored by the duopoly.
She's yet to return a single email or phone call since taking office, so
I'm not going to hold my breath on receiving a response.
They're concerned about the negative implications of the "Big Beautiful
Bill," as well as continued inflation and the ongoing threat of Chinese
companies buying American land, including land owned by long-time
farmers in the district. That's among a long, extensive laundry list of
issues in face-to-face conversations with Democrats, Republicans, and
independents alike, including people who were once active in the
Libertarian Party and haven't been for at least a decade or longer.
