Ziebarth The event will provide an overview of what tariffs are, how they work, and how they've been used historically. John Clark, President & CEO, Masterclock (Rotarian, Panel Moderator) PPE LEAGUE COMPETITION The Lindenwood Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) Team is gearing up to compete against other university teams at the national PPE League Competition at the University of Ottawa in Kansas on April 11, 2025. ?This year?s theme for the competition is the ?Immigration Dilemma.? Teams compete in four events, including a commercial competition addressing an immigration issue, a Settlers of Catan competition, a game theory competition, and a policy case competition, which draw on a range of skills and knowledge developed by the competing students. Ten students from across disciplines make up the Lindenwood team. The team is led by Dr. Joseph Steineger, the Hammond Institute Coordinator of Student Activities, and Dr. Dale Walton, Hammond Institute Fellow. The team has prepared for the competition through its reading group that started meeting in October. There are high expectations for the team?s performance after its first- and second-place finishes in the past two years. ?The Liberty & Ethics Center is focused on the humanistic aspects of the broader mission of the Hammond Institute. Its mission is to foster scholarship on the roles of free enterprise and liberty in advancing the virtues necessary for a society that is both prosperous and just. ? ECONOMIC EDUCATION CENTER ? GET MONEY SMART @ LINDENWOOD Starting April 1, the Hammond Institute?s Economic Education Center will host its annual Get Money Smart @ Lindenwood financial education series. This four-week series provides practical information presented in a concise, easy-to-understand format that equips Lindenwood students to improve their financial literacy and take actions that can help them achieve financial wellbeing. This year?s lineup includes speakers from Vantage Investment Services Group, Mission Financial, and Lindenwood University. The events are free and take place in-person or virtually in Dunseth Auditorium at 12:15pm-1:00 P.M. on April 1, 8, 15, and 22. REGISTER MAD CITY MONEY This semester, the Economic Education Center will reach more than two hundred high-school students around St. Louis through its Mad City Money Financial Reality Simulation. This is an experiential learning program designed to enhance students? financial knowledge and skills and empower them to be effective and responsible decision makers at both personal and professional levels. These activities were supported by the center?s partnerships with St. Louis Community Credit Union, the St. Louis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, and local schools. TEACHER WORKSHOPS In June, the Economic Education Center will partner with the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis to offer two professional development workshops for local educators, pre-service teachers (Lindenwood education majors), and Lindenwood education faculty. One workshop will focus on the elementary level and other on the secondary level. Participants will learn about free educational resources and creative teaching strategies that can be used in area classrooms to enhance students? economic and financial literacy. Participants will also learn about continuing education opportunities at Lindenwood. Email eec at lindenwood.edu for more information. EEC DIRECTOR PRESENTS AT MCSS CONFERENCE In February, Grant Black, Director of the Economic Education Center, presented at the 2025 Annual Conference for the Missouri Council of the Social Studies. His presentation, ?MO HiStory: Missouri History Through the Lives of Its Entrepreneurs,? equipped teachers with the MO HiStory curriculum that includes lessons based on short stories about 20 diverse entrepreneurial Missourians. The curriculum is designed to expose students to individuals whose entrepreneurial spirit led to the development of business and the growth of cities and towns throughout the state. The mission of the Economic Education Center includes the provision of services for K-16 educators, K-16 students, K-12 youth organizers, and K-12 parents. Through various activities the Center will increase economic and financial awareness and instill appreciation and value for using sound economic reasoning to make choices associated with comfortable and secure living. ? CENTER FOR APPLIED ECONOMICS ? ENTREPRENEURIAL ECOSYSTEM RESEARCH The Hammond Institute?s Center for Applied Economics continues its three-year research project examining needs and challenges faced by diverse participants in the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the St. Louis region. The project is funded by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and is a partnership with TechSTL and the St. Louis Community College Workforce Solutions Group. This spring, the research team continues to collect data through its St. Louis Work and Business Survey and to engage entrepreneurs and small business owners in a series of focus groups. If you aspire to be an entrepreneur, own a business, or just have a side gig, we want you to share your experiences by completing the survey.
