I'm trying to be realistic and practical, and move the LP in that direction, since the two major parties are leading us to financial collapse.
You're not going to get rid of these programs. Try telling the
guy/gal who is age 64 that they'll no longer be entitled to these
things. Social Security was paid into for decades. A significant
percent of seniors live off only Social Security. Since its a
pay-as-you-go system, stopping contributions cuts of benefits to
existing payees.
There is no way that the money can be repaid (even without
interest), even with closing all the foreign bases and making
other realistic savings
The next best thing to do is to try to reform them in a responsible manner, which neither of the major parties will do
Pure (but not pragmatic) v. pragmatic; I'll go with the latter
Allen please correct me if I am mistaken. Is the goal of your plan to make social security more financially sustainable? If that is the case, I could never support it. SS should never have been implemented and should be abolished. How we could possibly get there would be a better use of your financial genius than trying to save it. We as Libertarians must offer solutions that are consistent with what we believe and not look to just gain more popularity or votes. Now if a plan called for a reduction in Defense spending from closing bases around the world and using those savings to eliminate those on SS rolls by paying back their contributions or using mortality rates to give them lumpsum payoffs maybe that would be something to work with. I just do not think tweaking the language is going to make it any better. I am for full freedom not freedom light.
