Professional Photographer at LNC Meeting
All, I'm planning on having a professional photographer do some headshots and other high-quality images for the media. He's based in Phoenix and would be able to also do headshots for each member of the LNC in attendence at this weekend's meeting in Phoenix. The images would be provided to each member on DVD and also available to update our website. I'm thinking Saturday morning would be best, but if people have a different preference, please let me know. I wanted to give you the heads up so you can pack appropriately for how you'd like to appear in photographs. -Nick
If the photographer is not donating his or her services, who is paying for these photographs of LNC members? How much will these photos cost per person? Obviously SOMEONE has to be paying for them, one way or another. Please don't assume I am against this project. Having high quality photos of LNC members is a good idea. But since LNC members will receive a copy of the photo, I want to make sure the financial arrangements are transparent to our members. LNC funds, approximate cost is $100 per person, the photographer will waive his normal $200 setup fee. -Nick On Mon, Mar 23, 2015 at 9:09 AM, Scott L. <scott73@earthlink.net> wrote:

Dear colleagues: I hope all is well with you. I am planning to attend the meeting. All of the suggested times are fine with me, although the afternoon times may be the better choices; it is not unusual at meetings for at least one member to arrive after the call to order. Since I am the world's least photogenic person, it may be best if I am the last LNC member to be photographed. (This would allow the other members to be photographed before the camera breaks.) As always, thanks for your work for liberty. I look forward to seeing you again soon. Take care, Jim James W. I take strong exception to Dr. Lark's comments, in that I have long considered myself to be the world record holder of the "least photogenic" title. Is the photographer's camera insured? If so, I would suggest that I go first. That way after his camera is destroyed it will save us the cost of the remaining pictures. As to the timing of this creative destruction, I'd prefer that it not be early in the morning. I'm not an early-morning person, and I'll have a hard enough time adjusting to the Arizona time zone (even though they are not on Daylight Savings Time). Attending. I have no opinion on the time. Jay Estrada 432-934-2099 claudio.estrada@me.com
As you all know, the National LP is not exactly flush with cash right now. As I wrote earlier, having high-quality photographs "for the media", and for the LP web site, is not a bad thing. However, I don't think it is a good idea at this time to spend what could be over $2000 of our donor's money on a project that is clearly very optional. As a substitute, I propose the following: 1. Those LNC members who wish to take advantage of Mr. Sarwark's offer must donate $100 to the National LP to pay for the photos. I hope that method is FEC compliant. OR 2. If you are not satisfied with the quality of your photo at http://www.lp.org/lnc-leadership You can go to a provider of Passport photos near your home and get a digital Passport photo. These will probably not be professional quality, but they should suffice for the LP web site. With just minimal Google searching, I found a local store that will do them for $10. OR 3. You can have a family member or friend take a photo of you, after reading these tips: http://www.sitepoint.com/faking-pro-portraits-phone-camera/ I understand that spending $2000 is not going to throw the National LP into bankruptcy. However, since our current reserve is below the reserve requirement, I don't think it sends the right message to our members to spend National LP funds on this particular project at this time. For the above reasons, I decline to have the professional photographer take a photograph of me at the LNC Session in Phoenix. Dear Dr. Lieberman, I'm not going to make anyone sit for a photo they don't want. If you decide to reconsider, the photographer will be there and setup to take photos for everyone who will sit for him. I would like to have everyone present take advantage of that opportunity. I have been told by our Political Director that I need more and better photos to go out with media releases. I've also been told by convention planners for states I've been invited to speak to that they would like more and better photos for their promotional materials. For these reasons, I was planning to retain Mr. Uilkie. In consultation with Mr. Benedict, he suggested that I try to negotiate a reduced rate to get more and better photographs for the rest of the LNC. I did, and the final cost will be less than $100 per person. The end result is that our committee will have better looking photographs on our soon-to-be redesigned website with out soon-to-be redesigned logo. The committee will have high-quality photos that they can use for their next run for Federal, state, or local office. The committee will have high-quality photos that they can send to organizers of events and conventions that they go out to speak to. I am as careful with donor funds as I am with my own. I have decided that it makes sense to spend less than $100 per LNC member who spends thousands of dollars of their own money multiple times per year to travel to attend to the party's business to improve the image our party shows to the public. I'm happy if members of the LNC wish to donate to the party to defray some of that cost; board fundraising is below target so far for the year anyway. I'm happy if some of our sustaining members wish to donate to the party to defray some of that cost; we represent them. The LNC is well within its prerogative to override my decision on this issue (as on many other things), but if you do so I will still use my Chair's discretionary funds to pay for this because I think it's good for the LNC and the Libertarian Party. I hope you will reconsider, Nick On Tue, Mar 24, 2015 at 7:16 AM, Scott L. <scott73@earthlink.net> wrote:

Mr. Chair: It is not the responsibility of the National LP to provide free photography services for LNC members use "for their next run for Federal, state, or local office." And other than yourself and the Vice-Chair, how many other LNC members really need high-quality photos for **official** LNC business? I understand that some of our members are involved with other libertarian organizations, but again - National Libertarian Party donors should not be paying for free photography services that LNC members will use for non-LNC purposes. Even if you use the Chair's discretionary funds to pay for the photography services, it still means that $2000 of our donor's money was re-directed from mortgage payments or staff salaries to pay for the photos. Changing the budget item under which the money is spent doesn't make the effort and cost to raise that money disappear. As you all know, many of our members make their decision to renew their membership, or to donate money, as a result of actions that many of us would consider "insignificant." But, one person's insignificant trifle could be the last straw for one of our members, and could cause them to drop their LP membership. Please consider the optics of spending $2000 of LP money at this time on something that is perfectly doable by LNC members in their home states, on their own dime. The choices that I offered in my previous e-mail would not cost the LP anything other than the staff time required to post the photos to the web site. It sounds easy to ask people to just go out and get a professional photo made. But the reality is, not many people will actually get around to it. I've been meaning to get an updated photo for myself for about 5 years. Two former Chairs never seemed to get around to it. I'm glad Nick is going to make it happen. People are often already dressed up for LNC meetings and the photographer will be right there, so 20 people don't have to individually find a photographer, schedule a session, get dressed just for that reason, drive to a location, take the trouble to email me the photos, etc. I think this is a good efficient use of funds. But, I'm guessing maybe 15 people will take us up on the offer, and probably 8 to 10 will contribute $100 or more to cover the costs. So I'm estimating we're probably looking at more like $500 to $700 total cost to the LNC. We'll see. I'll contribute $100 at https://www.lp.org/contribute to defray the cost for my photo, and I'll contribute $100 also, if Robert Kraus also gets a photo made, after we receive the photos. As a substitute, I propose the following:
1. Those LNC members who wish to take advantage of Mr. Sarwark's offer must donate $100 to the National LP to pay for the photos. I hope that method is FEC compliant.
OR
2. If you are not satisfied with the quality of your photo at

You can go to a provider of Passport photos near your home and get a digital Passport photo. These will probably not be professional quality, but they should suffice for the LP web site. With just minimal Google searching, I found a local store that will do them for $10.
OR
3. You can have a family member or friend take a photo of you, after reading these tips:

I understand that spending $2000 is not going to throw the National LP into bankruptcy. However, since our current reserve is below the reserve requirement, I don't think it sends the right message to our members to spend National LP funds on this particular project at this time.
For the above reasons, I decline to have the professional photographer take a photograph of me at the LNC Session in Phoenix.

I am personally going to decline the photograph, to save the $100. I would otherwise contribute the $100 to defray the cost, but I had the attached picture taken three years ago by a professional photographer for my company's business, and I think that's adequate. (This is the picture that's currently on the LP web site, and unfortunately that's as good as it gets for me, which is why I still claim the unphotogenic title.) Hi all - I also already have a headshot, and am close friends with a few photographers who would donate, and have donated photos to the LP (including to candidates.) I strongly believe that Nick needs pro headshots, since he's the most obvious face of the party, and does quite a few media interviews as our official spokesperson. I could see the same being true of Carla and Wes. For the rest of the LNC, it is not yet as essential, in my view, since we don't do many more interviews than state chairs, candidates, etc. In the past, LNC members who did a lot of media usually had their own headshots (including the notorious Wayne Root.) I'll decline having my headshot done at the next meeting. -Arvin On Mar 24, 2015 1:58 PM, "Scott L." <scott73@earthlink.net> wrote:

As you all know, money from the National LP was used to pay for our working lunch during the LNC Session a few weeks ago. I don't feel comfortable accepting a "free" meal at an LNC Session, so I just donated $100 to the General Fund on the National LP web site. I assume the meal cost around $50 per person, so the remainder will pay for 50% of one of the photographs shown below. Even if we needed to spend the money on food and beverages to get the meeting room "for free", it was likely possible to also get the meeting room "for free" by increasing the room rate by $20 or so per night. Maybe that would hurt LNC members financially, but it would have saved our member's donated funds for something more directly related to political activity. If my understanding of the finances of the lunch is incorrect, I am sure that Mr. Kraus or Mr. Benedict will correct me. I am assuming that the amount of money that was donated for the photos did not cover the entire cost. Attending. However as an alternate with a new primary rep soon to be chosen by my region's state chairs, it makes little sense for me to be photographed. Sean O'Toole sean@kingfieldcapital.com (816) 739-2737 On 23 Mar 2015, at 10:48, Nicholas Sarwark wrote:
All,
I'm planning on having a professional photographer do some headshots and other high-quality images for the media.

Ms. Kirkland: Until last year, LNC Regional Alternates had their head shots on this web page: http://www.lp.org/lnc-leadership For some reason, those photos were removed at the beginning of the current LNC term. I know my photo is a little dated, but I assume LPHQ staff still has it on file somewhere. And even if they don't, I am happy to provide a new one taken here in California, at my expense, if staff changes their policy on posting the photographs of LNC Alternates. And just to make it clear - I don't care one way or the other if LNC Alternate's photographs are posted on the LP web site.
