May 3 LNC meeting via Adobe Connect to discuss logos
As agreed during the LNC meeting in Phoenix, on May 3rd (6 p.m. Pacific / 9 p.m. Eastern) the LNC will be using Adobe Connect to again take up the discussion on logo redesign proposals. *At the bottom of this message you will find the information needed to join the meeting.* Please note that per our rules, only LNC members/alternates may use the backup telephone number, and not guests. Guests should connect via computer, which is free. Each of you should review the electronic meeting rules on pages 14-15 of the policy manual: http://www.lp.org/files/LNC_Policy_Manual_Adopted_2015_03_28.pdf If you intend to invite those outside the LNC to participate, please note that there are some rules that apply to guests. In a separate email, I will provide copy/paste quality material suitable for non-LNC guests, including excerpts of the rules that apply particularly to guests. The Adobe Connect system has been used a few times by other committees, and the following lecture is based on that experience. 1) Even though it is possible to use a mobile device to join one of these meetings, you are mistaken if you think you can participate meaningfully while driving down the road in your car and connecting with your iPhone/iPad. It's dangerous. You can't pay attention to anything shown on the screen, and even the audio won't have your full attention because you're driving. Raising your hand, or voting, or trying to adjust your microphone is the equivalent of texting while driving, which could earn you a ticket (and no points from the Secretary, though other points could accrue on your license). You're much more likely to lose your connection as your signal is transferred from one cell tower to another. Etc. 2) You should make arrangements to be in a reasonably quiet location with a decent-speed internet connection. If you have a slow connection (like a cell tower) the audio/video may cut in and out for you. Don't be in a bowling alley or a night club or a grocery store. Children should be supervised by someone else in another room. Barking dogs or other noise-producing pets should be put in another location where they won't be heard by the rest of us. 3) USE YOUR HEADPHONES OR EARBUDS. I use the same earbuds I use with my iPod. You can buy a pair for $5 in lots of places. Not using headphones/earbuds will cause echoes for other participants because the sound coming out of your speakers will feed back in through your microphone and get re-transmitted. The echoes are very distracting and maddening. 4) When this system is used with only a handful of people, participants can generally leave their microphones on and self-regulate if two people talk over each other. This meeting will be the largest we've ever used the system for, and I suspect it will be important for everyone to mute their microphones while they're not talking, and use the raise-hand feature to have the chair recognize you to speak, after which you can turn on your microphone. -Alicia ----------------------------- Meeting Name: Libertarian National Committee When: 05/03/2015 6:00 PM Pacific / 9:00 PM Eastern Purpose: Discussion of Logo Redesign To join the meeting: https://lp.adobeconnect.com/lnc/ Audio Conference Details: If you join by computer/webcam at the link above, you do NOT also need to dial into this teleconference, which is a backup audio-only option. -- *"In general, we look for a new law by the following process. First, we guess it (audience laughter), no, don’t laugh, that’s the truth. Then we compute the consequences of the guess, to see what, if this is right, if this law we guess is right, to see what it would imply and then we compare the computation results to nature or we say compare to experiment or experience, compare it directly with observations to see if it works. If it disagrees with experiment, it’s WRONG. In that simple statement is the key to science. It doesn’t make any difference how beautiful your guess is, it doesn’t matter how smart you are, who made the guess, or what his name is. If it disagrees with experiment, it’s wrong. That’s all there is to it.”* -- Richard Feynman (https://tinyurl.com/lozjjps)
I have not sent a snail mail Logo survey yet as I had hoped to as discussed at the last LNC meeting. I don't see having time to squeeze one in before the LNC meeting. However, if someone is able to set up an online survey, I could send an email to participants to take the online survey. However, one problem remains that the Rosie the Riveter option proposed by Aaron Starr isn't finished yet as far as I know. So I suppose it's too soon to send a survey, now that I think about it. Just in case I’m unable to communicate this evening, please note my preference. Considering the financial cost of making a change, including costs to be incurred by both LNC and our state affiliates, I really do believe a COMPELLING graphic must be selected prior to LNC making the decision to change logos. Further, the final decision should be made during an in-person meeting with the final logo artwork having been presented. Also, LNC should not be rushed into making a decision regardless of whether an election season is upon us … and, regardless of whether the website upgrade is pending. For reference on the option to reinstate the original LP logo, Louisiana Calcasieu Party LP is making 1000 festival fans using the attached artwork. As you can see, to address space constraints, we merely cropped off the bottom portion of old logo: so, the bulk of our original lady liberty logo is present, but the shape is better for making festival fans. This image has 35 years of visual recognition behind it, and reproductions in one color are inexpensive.
