why are we actively soliciting refunds
Okay, I have not said anything but I am perturbed that while we have a convention pending we are actively encouraging people to get a refund now. It seems self-sabotaguing. And I am now convinced. A member wrote me about a refund. I asked to speak with him. The only reason he was asking was because "the chair said we should and seemed to pushing that." He really did not want one if we are going to have a convention but said our messaging is leading everyone to believe we won't. I have an issue with that. A simple phone call about what our decisions actually were kept $500 in our coffers. Why are we putting out self-sabotaguing messaging? * In Liberty,* * Personal Note: I have what is commonly known as Asperger's Syndrome (part of the autism spectrum). This can affect inter-personal communication skills in both personal and electronic arenas. If anyone found anything offensive or overly off-putting (or some other social faux pas) in an actual email, please contact me privately and let me know. *
I also red-flagged when I saw the email blast encouraging delegates to ask for refunds. Perhaps the thought is that delegates who have already obtained refunds are more likely to vote against adjourning to a future in-person event? Even the LNC voted for there to be a future in-person event. LP Bylaws Article 6.3 says the chair's authority is "subject to express National Committee policies and directives." A/V costs are already a very large percent of our total costs, and the in-person event will necessarily have INCREASED a/v costs due to social distancing needs. We really need those attendees to purchase packages. -Alicia On Fri, May 15, 2020 at 8:27 AM Caryn Ann Harlos via Lnc-business < lnc-business@hq.lp.org> wrote:

When you say, "we are actively encouraging people to get a refund now." are you referring to communications coming out of headquarters, or LNC members posting on social media? The only thing I've seen officially concerning a refund was an e-mail sent to the delegates May 12, which included this paragraph: "If you purchased a convention package and you need to request a refund, please don't hesitate. We don't want any member of the Libertarian Party to put themselves into a tough financial situation during this crisis. If you are in a position where you are able to redirect that package as a donation to the Libertarian Party, we will use it to support having our Presidential candidate on every American's ballot and in getting the Libertarian message to the American people." When members do ask staff about getting a refund, they are directed to a website with options to request a refund, donate the payment to ballot access or the building fund, take half the refund and donate half, or apply the refund to a future convention. They're also directed to https://lnc2020.com/category/covid19/ for the latest info. To date there have been about 33 requests for refunds. --- Tim Hagan Treasurer, Libertarian National Committee On 2020-05-15 08:27, Caryn Ann Harlos via Lnc-business wrote:

Both. That email and the chair on social media. I was also personally encouraged to ask for my 2K back. I declined. But it bothered me. This isn’t the first member to mention it to me. But it’s the first one to write me to ask how to get his money and welcomed a phone call. We are used to each other to forget how the average member looks up to the chair. He says to get your money NOW they listen. On Fri, May 15, 2020 at 2:13 PM Tim Hagan via Lnc-business < lnc-business@hq.lp.org> wrote:
