Dear All, During the discussions of how we adapt to the pandemic making travel and physical mass meetings impossible, many people have expressed concerns about the practicality of having a virtual convention. These fears are usually formed as questions about how it would work and used as arguments for delay and against trying to make it work. There are debates about the proposals, bylaws changes, and systems, but these are all done in the abstract. My belief is that this committee serves at the pleasure of the delegates, the delegates do not serve at the pleasure of the committee. They are not ours to be told what sacrifices they must make and what business they are allowed to consider. We are theirs to ensure that their voices are heard and that they make the decisions about the future of our party and who should represent them. To that end, I will gavel in a test run of the Libertarian National Convention on the Libertarian Party Zoom account tonight at 7:00 pm Eastern. Attendees will be credentialed and admitted to the room if they are national delegates or alternates, based on the current credentials committee lists. Others will be free to watch the simulcast on YouTube. Hosts of the meeting will be able to recognize attendees in order to speak. Regardless of the state of current discussions, it certainly isn’t a bad idea to run a mock conventions like this so we are at least aware of our capacity to deliver something because I double this is the last time this will come up so we might as well start building up our experience. Conventions aren’t our only event, and if we can demonstrate that the online medium are workable for large events it opens doors to fundraising and promotional events throughout the election season. I know feeling are tense between many right now, but let’s not prevent ourselves from seeking information and experiences that may be useful regardless of the outcomes of current discussions. Due to the slowness of my lp email this just came in. Doing this without inquiring as to the schedules of other involved people is frankly rude. I cleared my schedule to be there as mock convention schedule, but this did not just affect me. I would hope that EVH and Mr. Phillips would be just as incense at this being sprung upon the LNC with no courtesy of asking people's schedules. If we want to talk about agendas, this smacks of a PR stunt agenda. However, I will be there. If we do this again, I do not think it is unreasonable for the the LNC to be given more than 12 hours notice. That is ridiculous. I am sure I will hear some snarky comment about how I or anyone else doesn't need to be there. I will be there. And to be clear, my objections against a virtual convention have never been that it can't work. I don't think anyone at last Saturday's meeting did. My objection is that it is against our bylaws. It remains against our bylaws no matter how perfectly and majestically it could work. Being secretary is just as difficult and requires just as much planning as being chair, and that the secretary wasn't even consulted on this plan is outrageous.
