early Christmas present - $20, 000 for quiz door hangers
I'm pleased to announce a check received for $20,000 to help finance a major quiz door hanger distribution project in 2016. The check was hand delivered recently by Michael Chastain, of Austin, Texas. Mr. Chastain also recently contributed $4,000 for Oklahoma ballot access. I plan to do something similar to what we did in 2010: http://www.lp.org/blogs/staff/lp-monday-message-help-reach-a-million http://www.lp.org/blogs/staff/quiz-across-america-door-hangers-5-per-100 but this time, I want to do over a million door hangers. I can see having the quiz on one side, and our presidential nominee on the other. In 2010, we also received a $20,000 check from a different donor to help support door hangers. With the extra financing, we're able to sell them at five cents each and waive shipping charges, rather than selling at 10 cents each plus $5 shipping as we do now. For those of you new to the LNC, I've written separately, and will write more in the future, about how the door hangers do much more than simply provide the printed advertising benefits. They encourage local activity, etc. I'll write more about it later. To me, this was an early Christmas present to the LP, but I certainly understand others might see it differently: http://www.lp.org/poll/i-consider-myself-to-be-a-libertarian-politically-and... While door hangers may be of some use, I am not that impressed with our quiz hanger, as few will make use of it. If you are going to do door hangers they need to be simplier and better designed. Instead of door hanging, I would sooner see a 15 second radio or movie screen commercial that was a good attention getter, and not the drab and boring stuff we normally see in political commercials. I can remember back some years ago when I belonged to the Civil Air Patrol and one thing their organization offered to their state chapters were canned TV and radio commercials that were nice for getting the word out. We have ramped up our collection rate dramatically. I currently predict (but I caution that my prediction could be off due to many factors such as weather, competing petitions, validity issues, math or count errors, and many other issues), but again, I currently predict we will finish around January 15 plus or minus 10 days. Wes, It's really nice to see visual data like that; thanks so much for putting that together! I had a question for the LNC in general: do we have a knowledge-base or some kind of repository for keeping up with this kind of material? It would be really nice to know that there is a single place, accessible by all, where all of this information goes. When I ran in Texas last year it was immediately obvious that LPTexas had never made any effort to try to put such a knowledge base together. My campaign team and I did our best to collect everything we did and place it into a navigable Wiki so that other candidates could use it. It's far from exhaustive, but it was a start and many other candidates were able to use it. Incidentally Kurt Hildebrand has been really good at creating those systems within LPTexas using our org-system. Anyway, if we don't have anything like it then I would be happy to setup something like this for the LNC so that we're not relying solely upon email chains for historical information in the future. LPTexas Campaign Wiki: http://www.ludlow2014.com/wiki/ Login: lptexas Password: ludlow2014 Thanks much. Kevin On Mon, Dec 21, 2015 at 12:12 PM, Wes Benedict <wes.benedict@lp.org> wrote:

We have ramped up our collection rate dramatically. I currently predict (but I caution that my prediction could be off due to many factors such as weather, competing petitions, validity issues, math or count errors, and many other issues), but again, I currently predict we will finish around January 15 plus or minus 10 days.
I plan to do something similar to what we did in 2010: <http://www.lp.org/blogs/staff/lp-monday-message-help-reach-a-million> http://www.lp.org/blogs/staff/lp-monday-message-help-reach-a-million <http://www.lp.org/blogs/staff/quiz-across-america-door-hangers-5-per-100> http://www.lp.org/blogs/staff/quiz-across-america-door-hangers-5-per-100
but this time, I want to do over a million door hangers.
To me, this was an early Christmas present to the LP, but I certainly understand others might see it differently:

Kevin, I like the concept of having a repository for information. One of the challenges to putting something like that together is the vast differences of opinion on what ought to be done. Imagine the section for planning LNC meeting: Opinion A: hold it someplace inexpensive for board members like OKC Opinion B: hold it someplace more expensive that will impressive people (NYC) Opinion C: hold it online instead of in person I think you can imagine other disagreements on other topics: Ballot access: Opinion A Opinion B Conventions: Opinion A (hold it on a cruise ship). etc. Running for office: Opinion A etc. In any case, there is a ballot access committee tasked with putting together best practices for ballot access. And some places with repositories of info that that is hard to keep up to date. Great ideas and goals to have overall.

Roland, Again, the point is not to discuss the opinion (though you may just be speaking tongue in cheek here). For this type of thing it's to have hard numbers of what things actually cost. Hard numbers on the time it takes to get to/fro. Hard data on what transportation is available. Etc. In Wes' example of ballot access, it's not to record discussions on IF we should pursue ballot access, it's to provide the data and costs of how we've historically done it. What was successful? What failed? If you look through my campaign Wiki (the URL I sent a few emails ago), you will see costs detailed, turn-around times documented, contact information of sales people, discounts we were able to get, etc. Any new candidate could take that information and presumably save themselves dozens of hours of labor that my campaign had to expend since nobody had captured that data before (at least nobody could provide it to me). This kind of knowledge base is extremely useful. Without it we essentially have to start over each time there is a changing of the guard. It is extremely useful for eliminating the need to talk to somebody for historical information and typically has the benefit of making people more expendable (a good thing for an organization's growth). It follows the "bus theory" - that the LNC wouldn't be entirely stuck if everyone on the board suddenly died in a bus crash. This is a critical step to any organization that intends to grow. I don't see why we'd be any different :) -Kevin On Mon, Dec 21, 2015 at 2:09 PM, Roland Riemers <riemers@yahoo.com> wrote:

Wes, Thanks for the quick reply. If that is the case, then I will simply set something up and make sure that everyone on the LNC has access to it. At least to start, I would like to ensure that it is LIMITED to members of the LNC only. This is not to be secretive, but rather to ensure that we can build it up before hearing an unlimited number of opinions on how to change it. Your comment is incredibly well-taken. However if that's truly the case then this is something the LNC and LP need to learn how to do better and of course I would be happy to help facilitate that. Opinions are not especially useful for knowledge bases. What is useful is having unrestrained access to rules, facts, and data that is otherwise spread all over the place. Per my yard sign not having the word Libertarian on it, that is indeed an opinion. Understanding the laws regarding font sizes, the legal language about right of ways and things of this nature are not opinions and rather facts about how it needs to work. Additionally I would argue that since design work is no doubt very subjective that we should have a variety of templates available to people. There need not be a homogeneity to our processes, but it would be really useful if candidates (and others) didn't need to waste time starting from scratch. That was the part I found incredibly frustrating as a new candidate. As a business person, I can tell you that it's mind-boggling to see a complete lack of process documentation available. This is again what Kurt has largely worked to create within Texas and I would advocate that we do it at a national level too. Even the ballot access need not have opinions. It should have facts about what is available to us. This kind of fact gathering would likely make our future decisions much more valuable and of course turns us from discussing opinions to discussing strategies. Meaning, if could historically show the time it takes to get 10,000 signatures then we are better equipped to determine whether or not to spend money on such a venture. I will try to set something up for us. -Kevin On Mon, Dec 21, 2015 at 2:10 PM, Wes Benedict <wes.benedict@lp.org> wrote:

Wes,
Thanks for the quick reply.

I plan to do something similar to what we did in 2010: <http://www.lp.org/blogs/staff/lp-monday-message-help-reach-a-million> http://www.lp.org/blogs/staff/lp-monday-message-help-reach-a-million
<http://www.lp.org/blogs/staff/quiz-across-america-door-hangers-5-per-100> http://www.lp.org/blogs/staff/quiz-across-america-door-hangers-5-per-100
but this time, I want to do over a million door hangers.
To me, this was an early Christmas present to the LP, but I certainly understand others might see it differently:

Our chair had staff start a wiki knowledgebase last term. What quickly became apparent to a few of us is that two LNC members, whom I won't name here, likely would have provided 80% of the content due to their willingness to provide it--with staff and other LNC members feeling like they might not want a significant amount of such content. So then, we'd have the situation where staff (primarily me), would be telling my bosses (the LNC), what they can and can't do and write where. That's a tough position for staff to be in. With you putting together the wiki, it's a much more stable situation. You have no trouble providing frank feedback to your fellow LNC members. Wes, Thank you for the backstory. For what it's worth I greatly sympathize with the position certain people find themselves in (or at least feel they are in). I've never felt restrained by anyone in my adult life, don't imagine I ever will, and encourage others not to also. I guess I thought everyone was like that seeing on how [I think anyways] that's a pretty simple interpretation of Libertarianism. That being the case, I would be happy to set up a Wiki knowledge base and hope people will actively contribute to it. Perhaps someone could point me to the old knowledge base so that I can grab everything and move it over? I'll take that last line as joyfully and positively as it was meant to be. I wish everybody on the LNC would speak their mind; we might actually see that needle move! :) In the interim, I'll be sure to remind Region 7 that they're welcome to fire me come May. Thanks again. -Kevin On Mon, Dec 21, 2015 at 2:41 PM, Wes Benedict <wes.benedict@lp.org> wrote:

Wes,
Thanks for the quick reply.

I plan to do something similar to what we did in 2010: <http://www.lp.org/blogs/staff/lp-monday-message-help-reach-a-million> http://www.lp.org/blogs/staff/lp-monday-message-help-reach-a-million
<http://www.lp.org/blogs/staff/quiz-across-america-door-hangers-5-per-100> http://www.lp.org/blogs/staff/quiz-across-america-door-hangers-5-per-100
but this time, I want to do over a million door hangers.
To me, this was an early Christmas present to the LP, but I certainly understand others might see it differently:

To me, this was an early Christmas present to the LP, but I certainly understand others might see it differently:

Scott, This is the sort of thing a knowledge base should have in it. I noticed the other day that somebody posted the new LP logo and color specs within the Facebook group "Design for Liberty". If you go and look at that and open the PDF, that is a great example of the kind of stuff that goes into a knowledge base from a design POV. Manuals on how to do certain things should also exist within there so that we have a consistent pile from which to fetch information. -Kevin On Mon, Dec 21, 2015 at 2:29 PM, Scott L. <scott73@earthlink.net> wrote:
It would also be nice if there was a manual for volunteer ballot access petitioners.
I understand that the laws and policies are different in each state, so those facts do not need to be put into a nationwide manual.
But - there are *some* universal truths, such as *approximately* how many sigs per hour volunteers can expect to collect, what to say to people to get them to sign, etc.

Wes,
Thanks for the quick reply.

I plan to do something similar to what we did in 2010: http://www.lp.org/blogs/staff/lp-monday-message-help-reach-a-million http://www.lp.org/blogs/staff/quiz-across-america-door-hangers-5-per-100
but this time, I want to do over a million door hangers.
To me, this was an early Christmas present to the LP, but I certainly understand others might see it differently:
