All,I present the following for informational purposes from states represented by the geographic subdivision known as Region 3.From the Libertarian Party of Ohio on Saturday:WHEREAS Mr. James Weeks II (Michigan), through his on-stage actions during the Libertarian Party National Convention’s Chair nomination process, did serious harm to the reputations of the National Libertarian Party, and collectively and separately harmed the representative States of Region 3;WHEREAS Mr Weeks resides in one of the member states of the Region 3 Compact, therefore a unified regional message would be a good-faith measure to show our collective states’ positions on those actions; andWHEREAS the Libertarian Party of Ohio firmly believes in free speech, but does not ascribe to the belief that speech is excused from consequences or response; therefore be itRESOLVED that the Libertarian Party of Ohio officially and vehemently REPUDIATES the actions of Mr. Weeks;RESOLVED that the Libertarian Party of Ohio shall request a meeting with our Regional Representative and the collective States which have joined the Region 3 compact;RESOLVED that the Libertarian Party of Ohio shall introduce (or support if another acceptable document is introduced prior) a regional resolution at that meeting, which also repudiates Mr. Weeks’s actions, but neither recommends nor discourages any further action by state, region, or the LNC.From the Libertarian Party of Michigan on Sunday:Motion to suspend James Weeks II from the LP of Michigan for a period of 2 years with a starting date of May 29, 2016. This motion is being made as a consequence for his actions at the LP National Convention. During his nomination speech for chair of the LPUSA, Mr. Weeks inappropriately disrobed on stage in front of a nationally televised C-SPAN audience.
This motion is being made for the following reasons:
- The incident reflected poorly on the public image of the Libertarian party
- The incident was unprofessional for a political organization seeking to influence an upcoming election and gain credibility with the voting public
- The incident has been cited by at least one member as a reason to relinquish affiliation with the LP of Michigan
- The incident has been officially rebuked via resolution by at least one other state level Libertarian Party (Ohio)
This suspension will ban Mr. Weeks from participation as an LPM member in any LPM events, functions, or candidacies until May 29, 2018. In addition, the LP of Michigan disassociates itself from the James Weeks II for Sheriff campaign for 2016. Furthermore, the Michigan Libertarian Executive Council requests that Mr. Weeks author a letter of apology for his actions addressed to both the LPUSA & LPM.Brett C.
