The period for comments on the 3/28/15 draft minutes ended yesterday. Attached is the updated draft. Besides getting the correct versions of the Chair's and Secretary's reports for the appendices, the other changes are editorial in nature, rather than substantive. Region 6 has notified me that Roland Riemers has been selected as their new region representative. Sean O'Toole remains their regional alternate. I've added Roland to this email list. Roland, you can find the current LNC policy manual online at: http://www.lp.org/lnc-meeting-archives Note that this is not a private email list. Anyone can subscribe to read the LNC-Business list. Anything said here is public. We will be having an electronic meeting on May 3rd at 6 p.m. Pacific / 9 p.m. Eastern to discuss whether or not to adopt a new logo. Attached is a .jpg file with our short-list of logo concepts that will be discussed at that time. The next in-person LNC meeting is scheduled for July 18-19 in Alexandria, VA. Staff will post more details to this list when they become available. -Alicia

Thank you, Arvin. Now that I can see the logo candidates side-by-side, here are my impressions: 1. "Torch Eagle" -- Not bad, and I could live with it. But I'm not as enthusiastic as I was at the LNC meeting. 2. "Torch Flower" -- Meh. I could tolerated it, just barely. There are several better options. 3. "Liberty Bell L" -- No. I'm not a fan of negative space, and if someone doesn't immediately recognize the bell portion it looks pretty stupid. 4. "1996 (prior) Logo" -- This would be my default choice if we can't agree on anything else. 5. "L-Looping-P" -- I can't make up my mind about this. On the one hand I appreciate its clean form and simplicity, and the way it could lend itself to good branding. On the other hand, it seems like it would only be effective if we spent $100 million on a marketing campaign to establish it as the LP symbol, similar to what giant corporations would have to do to re-brand themselves. Plus it lacks any inherent meaning, which may not bother the general public but would matter to a lot of libertarians. 6. "Crown-in-Torch" -- I like it. It has a touch of elegance and maintains the LP's torch of liberty theme. I wouldn't necessarily put it in first place, but I'd classify it as one of the leading contenders. 7. "Stylized Lady Liberty" -- It's okay, but I think it's a bit inferior to #4. 8. "Old Logo" -- Too dark. Not as good as #4. 9. "Rosie the Riveter" -- This has possibilities. But this was a conceptual suggestion, and needs to be simplified and stylized a bit to make it more practical. Aaron Starr had proposed this, and said he was going to follow up with the Texas LP and contact the designer to see if an improved version could be made. I'm copying Aaron on this email, to see if he's made any progress along those lines. Perhaps it's just me, if so please ignore. All of a sudden, I am receiving a lot of spam on my LNC related e-mail account. This is a recent development (last month or two), having been on this list for five years now. I _suspect_ that the current web site posing of my e-mail address, even though somewhat disguised, are now being harvested. Assuming that I am not the only one experiencing this problem, may I request that the e-mail addresses on the web site be better disguised? Libertarian National Committee executive director Wes Benedict commented, "Republican Drew Springer's bill is a poll tax on minor parties, including the Libertarian Party. It's an injustice, and it's unconstitutional." The bill would require all minor party nominees to pay fees to be allowed to appear on the November election ballot. The fees range as high as $5,000, depending on the office. Kurt Hildebrand, chair of the Libertarian Party of Texas, said, "This law would effectively shut down third parties in Texas, and I believe that is the intent behind it." According to ballot access expert Richard Winger, the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled twice that this sort of filing fee is unconstitutional. On April 6, the Texas House Elections Committee voted 5-1 in favor of the bill. (Five Republicans voted yes, one Democrat voted no.) Similar bills have been filed by Texas Republicans in past legislative sessions. Benedict explained, "Republicans have claimed in the past that their bills make things 'fair' because Republicans and Democrats have to pay filing fees for their primaries. Nothing could be further from the truth. "Republicans and Democrats have to pay primary fees because their primary elections are financed by taxpayers. Political parties are private organizations, even though they are regulated by the state. Nevertheless, taxpayers are forced to hand over a lot of money to help the Republicans and Democrats pick their nominees. The filing fees pay for a tiny fraction of these costs. "Libertarians and Greens, on the other hand, don't use primaries. We don't force the taxpayers to pay for our nomination process. So there's no reason our candidates should be forced to pay any fees. "If Republicans and Democrats are upset about their primary filing fees, they should just get rid of them. They control 100% of the seats in the legislature, so it should be pretty easy for them. "The purpose of Drew Springer's bill is simple: it has nothing to do with fairness, it's just an attempt to shut all minor parties out of the election process. If this bill gets passed, there will be many more unopposed Republicans and unopposed Democrats in the 2016 elections. "Representative Drew Springer has also filed a bill to prohibit school districts from offering same-sex couples the same benefits as opposite-sex couples. That gives us an idea of what 'fair' means to him. "I urge legislators who support democracy to oppose this poll tax, which is designed to silence minority opinions. "This is America. The people should decide who gets to run for office, not the incumbents. Libertarians stand for freedom on every issue, and we oppose bullies who would try to stop us from participating in the election process." Benedict added, "Texas isn't the only place that Republicans are trying to step on voting rights. In New Hampshire, the Republican National Committee is trying to get involved in a lawsuit over the state's petitioning law. The law was changed in 2013 to make it harder for small parties to get petition signatures to appear on the ballot. The Libertarian Party filed a lawsuit against the change, but the Republican National Committee is trying to intervene in support of the change."
